Encycleopedia

Nowadays I sell Bulliltt cargo bikes, but once upon a time I used to publish Encycleopedia, The Guide To Alternatives In Cycling.

If you are interested in Bullitts then you obviously appreciate quality and it is typical of the kind of products in Encycleopedia.

First published in 1993, the idea for Encycleopedia came about to help bridge the gap between specialist independent manufactures of the more interesting products from around the world which at that time were not available from the IBD (independent bicycle retailers) main markets: ie the UK, Germany and the US.
The very first Encycleopedias predated the internet as we know it today and were so innovative a concept that most of the mainstream bike businesses really didn’t understand what we were doing, which was okay because the original idea was to give a platform for the new innovative companies.
By the time I published this last Encycleopedia in 2003, which had an accompanying video CD (available online here ), even the established brands wanted to take part: for example Shimano revealed their brand new Nexave C910 di2 (digitally integrated intelligence), a whole decade before the technology became widespread.
The recent upsurge in cycling popularity and the instant access to up to date information online, means that nowadays there are literally hundreds of small specialist distributors and everything is just a click away.
So, there is not much scope for another Encycleopedia, but I am planning to launch a new book aimed at non-cyclists: Celebrating Cycling.
I still have some pristine, mint-condition copies of this last Encycleopedia for sale here – you can get a preview of the book via this flip-book link. Obviously, some of the information is obsolete but it is still a good read and there are some great images.
